One of a kind — only one available.

A remarkably rare early 20th-century Arts and Crafts pottery pendant attributed to Mary Seton Watts and the Compton Potters’ Arts Guild. The pendant is modelled in relief with three seated winged figures representing the traditional maxim: ‘Hear No Evil – Say No Evil – See No Evil’. The figures are surrounded by an integral scrolling border bearing the words, with the original polychrome decoration in shades of green, ochre, cream and brown. A suspension hole and old metal hanging ring are incorporated at the top. Mary Seton Watts (1849–1938), born Mary Fraser Tytler, was an important British Symbolist designer, ceramicist and social reformer. She was the wife of celebrated Victorian artist George Frederic Watts and the creative force behind the extraordinary Watts Cemetery Chapel at Compton, Surrey. Mary established pottery classes for local villagers, which developed into the Compton Potters’ Arts Guild around the turn of the 20th century. The Guild produced distinctive handmade pottery, jewellery, plaques and garden ornaments influenced by Celtic, medieval and Symbolist art. These pieces are now highly collectable and examples of the jewellery are particularly scarce. This example is unmarked and is offered on attribution, based upon comparison with documented examples of the same design. A genuinely unusual and highly collectable piece of British Arts and Crafts history, and a rare opportunity for collectors of Mary Seton Watts, Compton Pottery or Symbolist jewellery.
